Corpus Christi

The Feast of Corpus Christi was established by Pope Urban IV in 1264 and has been celebrated in Poland since the 14th century. It became one of the most important religious holidays in the country, with elaborate outdoor processions becoming the central tradition. During the communist period, the processions took on additional significance as public expressions of faith that the authorities could not easily suppress. Poland is one of the few countries where Corpus Christi remains a public holiday.

The highlight of Corpus Christi is the outdoor procession. Parishes prepare four temporary altars (ołtarze) along the procession route, each decorated with flowers, candles, and religious images. The priest carries the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance under a canopy, and the congregation follows, singing hymns and praying. Girls in white dresses scatter flower petals along the path. Streets along the route are decorated with garlands, banners, and religious symbols.

Since Corpus Christi always falls on a Thursday, many Poles take Friday off to create a four-day weekend. The holiday occurs in late May or June, making it an ideal time for early summer outings. After the morning procession, families typically gather for a festive meal. In smaller towns and villages, Corpus Christi processions are major community events that draw large crowds.
