Independence Day

Poland lost its independence in 1795 when the Third Partition divided the country among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. For 123 years, Poland did not exist as a sovereign state. The opportunity for independence came with the end of World War I and the collapse of the partitioning empires. On November 11, 1918, military command in Warsaw was transferred to Józef Piłsudski, marking the effective restoration of Polish independence. November 11 was established as a national holiday in 1937, banned during World War II and the communist period, and restored in 1989.

Official celebrations include wreath-laying ceremonies at national monuments, military parades, and addresses by the President and government officials. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw's Piłsudski Square is the focal point of the national celebrations. Schools organise patriotic programmes, and public buildings display the Polish flag. In recent years, a large Independence March has become a major event in Warsaw.

November 11 is a day of patriotic reflection for Poles. Many attend church services, and cultural institutions organise special exhibitions and concerts. Cities hold torch-lit processions, patriotic concerts, and historical reenactments. The holiday serves as a reminder of the long struggle for freedom and the importance of national sovereignty.
