Christmas Day

Christmas has been celebrated in Poland since the adoption of Christianity in 966 AD. Over the centuries, Polish Christmas traditions developed into a unique blend of religious observance and folk customs. The celebration of Christ's birth became deeply intertwined with Polish national identity, and Christmas traditions were maintained even during the most difficult periods of the country's history, including the partitions and World War II.

Christmas morning typically begins with a festive breakfast featuring the leftover dishes from the previous evening's Wigilia supper. Unlike Christmas Eve, Christmas Day meals include meat - roast meats, sausages, and elaborate cakes and pastries are common. Many families attend morning mass. The day is spent in the intimate circle of the closest family, relaxing, playing with new gifts, and enjoying the holiday atmosphere.

In contemporary Poland, Christmas Day is one of the quietest days of the year. Shops and businesses are closed, and public transport runs on a reduced schedule. Families gather around the Christmas tree, continue the festive meals, and enjoy indoor activities. The day provides a welcome contrast to the bustling preparations of the preceding weeks and the excitement of Wigilia the night before.
