Easter Monday

The Śmigus-Dyngus tradition dates back to pagan times, long before Poland's Christianisation. It was originally a spring fertility ritual associated with water and renewal. The tradition survived the adoption of Christianity and was incorporated into Easter celebrations. The earliest written records of the custom date to the 15th century, though it is believed to be much older.

The central tradition of Easter Monday is pouring water on others, especially young women. Historically, young men would go from house to house, dousing girls with buckets of water. In return, the girls could retaliate on Tuesday. Today the custom is more playful - water pistols, water balloons, and small cups of water are common, particularly among children and young people in cities. In rural areas, more traditional forms of the custom may still be observed.

Beyond the water traditions, Easter Monday is a day of continued family celebrations. Many families visit relatives, share leftovers from the Easter feast, and enjoy outdoor activities if the weather allows. Some regions hold local festivals and gatherings. For many Poles, the Easter Monday weekend marks the first real taste of spring.
